When a dental emergency occurs, your first feeling might be to panic. If a tooth is knocked-out, you may feel even more afraid of what you should do next, whether it’s your own tooth or someone you know. However, when a tooth gets knocked out, you don’t have to settle for a missing tooth. There are steps you can take as soon as the incident occurs to improve your condition as well as your chances of getting the tooth reimplanted. Here are five steps according to an emergency dentist in Bensalem.
Pick Up the Tooth (By the Crown Only)
Do your best to locate the tooth so that it can be placed back into the mouth by a dentist. It’s important to avoid touching the root portion of the tooth as it can negatively influence your chances of getting it reimplanted. Instead, pick up the tooth by the top portion (or the crown) and avoid removing any tissue that may still be attached to the tooth.
Gently Clean the Tooth
While you should avoid scrubbing the tooth, you should always remove any dirt and debris from the tooth before placing it back into your mouth. This can be done by gently rinsing it under cool water. After rinsing the tooth, don’t let the tooth dry out. Never use soap or chemicals to clean the tooth as this can hurt your chances of getting the tooth placed into your open socket.
Place the Tooth Into the Socket
Attempt to place the tooth into your mouth. After gently putting it into your open socket, you can secure it by carefully closing your mouth. You can also hold the tooth in place as you bite down. Make sure the tooth is facing the correct way before placing.
It’s very important for the tooth to remain moist. Dryness can damage the tooth and make it more difficult to reimplant. If you cannot place the implant back into your mouth on your own, keep it submerged in either milk, saltwater, or in your mouth next to your cheek.
Get to a Dentist Right Away
Get to a dentist’s office within the hour, (and ideally in the next 30 minutes) for the best chances of reimplanting the tooth. The sooner you get to a dentist, the more easily the tooth can be placed back into your jaw by a professional.
When a tooth gets knocked out, you don’t have to deal with it alone. If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, whether it’s for a knocked-out tooth, dental discomfort, or something else, don’t wait to call them right away.
