The back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of the year. As a parent, you’re trying to do everything in your power to ensure that your child has a healthy, productive and joyous school year. To help achieve that, you’ll need to schedule an end-of-summer dental exam. It’s only natural to want your dentist to give a positive assessment of your child’s oral health. Here’s what you can do to encourage that!

The Power of a Routine

One way to encourage excellent dental care is to place your child on a back-to-school schedule as the end of summer draws near.  Although it may not be celebrated, consider waking your child up at the same time you would during the school year. To maximize your efforts, have him or her brush and floss in the morning and at night before going to bed. By establishing this regimen early, you won’t have to worry about doing so once the semester gets underway.

Keep Sugar-Free Chewing Gum Handy

Most children have an affinity for sweets. Thus, many of them enjoy chewing gum. One way to satisfy your child’s craving for something sweet and fortify his or her teeth and gums is to keep some sugar-free gum on hand. Here are some of the specific benefits it offers:

  • Stimulates saliva production to help remove leftover debris
  • Provides a safer alternative to candy, sugary gum and other sweets
  • May help prevent your child snacking on junk food between meals

Make Dental Hygiene a Big Event

If your child is younger, take a trip to your local retailer to look for a toothbrush and floss that feature a favorite character. For an older child, you may consider purchasing an electric toothbrush. In addition to providing a thorough cleaning, the sleek design and powerful motor may grab his or her attention and generate some excitement about performing dental hygiene.

Offer Rewards for Consistent Oral Care

No matter what their age is, children love receiving gifts and special treatment. You can encourage excellent dental hygiene by rewarding your child with a shopping trip to a favorite store, an outing at a theme park or some other creative way of acknowledging his or her efforts. Thus, you can expect greater compliance in the future.

There are several ways to foster oral health excellence; it just takes a little bit of creative thinking. Meanwhile, you can incorporate the above suggestions into your summer regimen and look forward to an awesome back-to-school dental visit and healthy year for your child!
