What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns in Bensalem are one of the most versatile restorations used in dentistry, for a number of reasons. For one, they are very effective at both restoring teeth to their fullest functions while also ensuring the tooth has the best appearance possible. Using tooth-colored ceramic materials, we can not only make every patient’s smile look natural and complete, but also renew your ability to chew all of your favorite foods. In addition to improving your tooth’s beauty and structure, crowns can protect a tooth that has just been treated with a root canal. They can also cover a single dental implant to complete your smile.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Here are some of the reasons why patients love our dental crowns:
- Relief from the discomfort of having to chew with damaged teeth
- A natural-looking solution that is fully customized just for you
- Save your tooth from sustaining additional damage that could require it to be extracted later on
- The ability to last for a decade or more with minimal maintenance
What Are Dental Bridges?
A tried-and-true method of replacing teeth, dental bridges consist of multiple crowns fused together. Most bridges have three crowns, but they can have more to replace multiple consecutive teeth. To stay in place, the crowns on either side adhere to the top of previously modified teeth, creating a solid foundation. If you’d prefer a more advanced dental bridge, they can also be combined with dental implants to provide a much stronger base and make chewing even easier.
Benefits of Dental Bridges
If you choose to rebuild your smile with a dental bridge, you can expect to enjoy the following benefits:
- A renewed ability to talk and chew properly
- Fill the empty space in your smile
- Prevent your adjacent teeth from drifting out of place
- Evenly distribute your biting force, preventing orthodontic issues
- Maintain the shape of your facial structure
- Can last for many years with the right care
Dental Crown & Bridge FAQs
Have you never received a dental crown before? Not sure what to expect during your treatment or why you need one in the first place? Below, you can find a handful of the most common questions our dentists hear as well as their detailed answers. If you have another question, feel free to ask your dentist in Bensalem!
Why Is a Dental Crown Needed?
Dental crowns can be used for a variety of circumstances. However, the most common reason a crown is used is to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay. With that said, dental crowns can also be used to cover major cavities that fillings alone cannot adequately restore. They can also replace fillings that are no longer protecting your tooth. If you need a root canal, a crown will be used to cover the affected tooth as well.
How Long Do Dental Crowns & Bridges Last?
There are multiple factors that can influence the longevity of a dental crown or bridge. For example, if you don’t practice at-home oral care regularly enough, the tooth underneath the restoration can still develop decay and cause the restoration to fail. However, a crown or bridge may also last longer depending on the health of your natural tooth. While all dental crowns and bridges will likely need replacement at some point, they are designed to last for many years, typically between 10 and 15.
How Are Dental Crowns & Bridges Prepared?
In order to create the most accurately shaped restoration possible, we need to capture an impression of your current tooth. Prior to the impression, we’ll remove a very small amount of enamel so that the crown or bridge has room to attach properly, then have you bite into impression material. This mold is used to create your restoration, which is done at an off-site dental lab. In the meantime, you’ll wear a temporary until the permanent one is fabricated, which takes about two weeks. Once completed, you’ll come back to our office at your second appointment to have the temporary crown replaced with a permanent crown or bridge.
Why Do I Need a Temporary Restoration?
Since your natural tooth is modified to make room for a permanent crown or bridge, we don’t want to leave it exposed to oral bacteria or the foods you eat while we wait for it to be made. Thankfully, you won’t have to wear it for too long.
How Do I Take Care of My Temporary Restoration?
You’ll want to avoid sticky or chewy foods which can pull the temporary crown or bridge off of your natural tooth. When chewing, opt for the side of your mouth where the temporary is not located. We also advise against eating hard or crunchy foods, which can also make the restoration loose. When flossing, do not pull the floss up when removing it from between your teeth. Instead, pull it directly forward.
